Past and present - Calais' cyanotypes

Ongoing project

In this series, I depict my hometown of Calais using the cyanotype technique. Through the use of this ancient photographic process, I try to blur the line between past and present. These images are an answer to the monochromatic pictures produced between 1898 and 1958 by local photographer Paul Villy. The city is very different today from what it was at that time. It was bombed to the ground during WW2 and more than 70% of it disappeared. Using this ancient technique, I aim at blurring the lines between the present and the past, trying to create a visual continuity to depict a place which underwent so many societal and architectural changes.
